CFO advice
A P2 conversation that earned recognition in. A question about other CFOs out. We are asking for advice, not for a list to spray. If they name a peer, that is a gift. If they don't, we still learned. This page is that motion.
Doctrine stays internal. They never hear "referral program" as the point of the call. The communication instructions still govern: no-oriented, "that's right" over "yes," no forced close.
This does not mint a problem. A CFO who gives advice has not qualified an opportunity. Titles do not prove they own the buy.
Why advice, not "who should I sell to"
Plant CFOs (and controllers who are the finance function) live a small world. They already know who else cannot close the month without three workbooks. They will protect those people from a vendor. They will talk to a peer who is trying to understand the Friday.
| Extractive (do not) | Advice-driven (this page) |
|---|---|
| "Can you intro me to three CFOs this week?" | "Who in your world lives the Friday where job cost and the GL disagree?" |
| "We're building a customer advisory board" as bait | "I may have the wrong picture. Who would correct me?" |
| Paid referral for a name | No fee for a name. If company terms exist later, they are not the open. |
| LinkedIn "open to an intro?" blast | One human, after a scene is shared or after they taught us |
Social proof bias is real. We do not manipulate it. We ask who is safe to learn from, and we disclose comparability if we ever use what we heard.
When we ask
| Moment | Ask? |
|---|---|
| They said "that's right" about a scene, even if they are not buying | Yes. This is the main door. |
| They declined a project and still respected the conversation | Yes, lightly. "Would it be a bad idea to ask who else lives that close?" |
| Cold, no scene, ZoomInfo title only | Rare. Only with a public artifact (earnings language, job post for "financial analyst + Excel + plant"). Otherwise it is a disguised pitch. |
| They are in grief, a failed implementation, or asked not to be contacted | No. Love of client. |
| We want to fill a sequence step called "referral ask" | No. That is a bounty. |
Family-owned plants: the "CFO" may be the owner, a spouse, or the outside CPA. Ask in the function, not the title. External accountants are a different room (Accounting AI course).
What we say (beats)
Transparent identity. No-oriented time. Then advice as the job of the message — not a tour, then a referral trap.
Cold (only with an artifact):
- "This is going to look like a software person mining your network. If that is what this is, delete it."
- "I may be wrong. It looks like plant finance still has to make Friday true in Excel even when something called an ERP is in the building."
- "Would it be a bad idea to ask who else in your world lives that close — not as a sales intro, as who I should learn from? Or would you rather I left you alone?"
After a live conversation that earned recognition:
- "If you were trying to understand this Friday from the finance chair, who would you want to hear it from?"
- "Is there a CFO you'd trust to tell me I have the wrong picture?"
- "Would you rather I did not ask you to name anyone?"
Never: "Got 15 minutes with your peer?" as our close to them. Never "you're right, so who else?" (counterfeit yes). If they say "you're right," treat it as unproven and keep hunting "that's right" or a correction.
Calibrated, if they engage: "How do plant CFOs usually decide whether the operating system is lying to the statements?" Let them teach. Mechanism and proof wait.
If they name a person
- Thank them. Stop. Do not pull a second name in the same breath.
- Ask how they would want that person approached — or whether they want to make an introduction. We do not take a name and cold-email "so-and-so said to call."
- If they intro: we stay on the scene, not on "your friend loves us." The new CFO is the protagonist. Disclose how we know them.
- Log in Salesforce: advice received, names only if they consented to an intro. Not "referral stage 1 of 8."
If they say "that's not our Friday": "That's right — thank you." Ask one calibrated question or leave. Do not rescue a referral.
1. Who we ask (list)
Same band: 50–500, process we sell, micro-vertical when we are in a slice. ZoomInfo verifies identity. SG_004 / SG_005 / SG_007 tell us whether a finance chair exists. They do not tell us the person wants to talk.
Cap: a few advice conversations a week, not a CFO spray.
2. After advice (what we do with it)
Advice is research. It can correct our scene bank. It is not a testimonial and not a case study. To use anyone's words in peer voice content, we need their consent and their approved cut.
Do not quote "a CFO told us" on a call with another plant. That is
stolen context. If the lesson is general ("the close still runs in
Excel"), it can inform our hypothesis status (inferred) without a
name.
What this is not
- A customer advisory board as theater.
- Permission to spam a named peer.
- Proof of P_00010 or any problem.
- The Accounting AI course (teach-first to accountants). This page is one-to-one advice from P2.
- "Who is the decision maker?" disguised as curiosity.
